January 4 — Lt. General David Petraeus is named the top commander in Iraq. He replaces General George Casey, Jr. Admiral William Fallon succeeds General John Abizaid as the head of Central Command. January 10 — U.S. President George W. Bush announces that an additional 20,000 troops will be deployed to Baghdad to try to stem sectarian violence. He also states that Iraq is committing to a number of “benchmarks, including increasing troop presence in Baghdad and enacting oil revenue-sharing and job-creation legislation.
