In 2003, Evan Miller was convicted of the capital murder of Cole Cannon. Miller, who was 14 at the time, and a 16-year-old friend had been drinking and smoking marijuana with the 53-year-old Cannon, Miller’s neighbor. An altercation ensued, and Miller and his friend beat Cannon and set his house on fire, leaving him to die from smoke inhalation. Miller was tried as an adult and received the mandatory minimum sentence for his crime under Alabama law, which is life in prison with no possibility of parole.
