Secretary of State Acheson's 1949 Radio Address
The June-July 1949 Congressional Digest topic was"Congress and the North Atlantic Treaty." The followingstatement from then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson, summarizingthe principal provisions of the Treaty, is excerpted from thatissue.First, the pact is carefully and conscientiously designed toconform in every particular with the Charter of the United Nations.This is made clear in the first article of the pact, which reiteratesand reaffirms the basic principles of the Charter.
