The European Union established diplomatic relations with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in 2001 and sent a diplomatic mission, headed by Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson, to that nation in May 2002. The European Union became a nonvoting delegation to the United Nations in 1974, but it has special "full participant" status in a number of UN conferences. Ellen Margrethe Løj was named Ambassador to the UN from Denmark in 2001.
