Military Abortion Coverage
On December 4, 2012, the Senate passed an amendment to the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would extend abortion insurance coverage to victims of rape or incest in the military, including servicewomen and their dependents. The amendment, introduced by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (NH-D), also requires the DOD to provide abortions at military facilities. Unlike most other federal health programs, Department of Defense (DOD) rules do not include a funding exemption for abortion coverage in cases of rape or incest. The ban has been in place since 1979.
