The United Kingdom contributed significant forces in the March 2003 coalition invasion of Iraq, and its military continues to occupy the southern portion of the nation. It is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Jack Straw was appointed Foreign Secretary in 2001. He served as British Home Secretary from 1997 to 2001.
