Crisis pregnancy centers, often run by religious-affiliated groups, provide free advice, supplies, and — if they are licensed — medical services for expectant mothers in part to discourage them from seeking abortions. There are more then 3,000 such facilities across the United States. Abortion-rights advocacy groups contend that the centers often provide incomplete or erroneous information and are designed to confuse clients into believing they are visiting full-service women’s health clinics.
