After investigating his background, U.S. officials determined that Hamdan was the personal bodyguard and driver of al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden. Hamdan was deemed an "enemy combatant" and transferred to the U.S. military base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, for detention. On July 13, 2004, Hamdan was charged with conspiring with al Qaeda to commit the offenses of "attacking civilians; attacking civilian objects; murder by an unprivileged belligerent; and terrorism" and directed to stand trial before a military tribunal created…
