In March 2001, the American Civil Liberties Union joined Buono in filing a lawsuit against the U.S. Government challenging the display of an eight-foot cross first erected on Sunrise Rock in the preserve by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in 1934 as a war memorial.
