1858 After decades of resistance, the Muslim North Caucasus region of Chechnya is conquered by Russia and incorporated into the Russian empire.1917 The Dagestan region, including Chechnya, declares its independence following the Bolshevik Revolution. 1923 Bolshevik troops occupy Dagestan and divide the region, creating the Chechen autonomous region. 1934 The Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic is established.1944 Soviet leader Josif Stalin deports thousands of Chechens to Siberia and Central Asia, on suspicion of collaborating with Nazi Germany. Many thousands die in the process.1957 Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev restores the Chechen-Ingush Republic. Chechens return home.1991 …
