Adapting to the Realities of a Twenty-First Century World

Foreword

The Security Council is the most powerful organ of the United Nations. While the other five bodies can make recommendations, the UN charter gives the Security Council the broader power to make decisions in situations involving "threats to the peace, breaches of the peace, or acts of aggression" that member governments must then carry out. Such decisions may include economic sanctions or the use of armed force "to maintain or restore international peace and security."
