The Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) within the U.S. Department of Education (ED) is the primary entity responsible for the administration and oversight of the federal student aid programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965. As such, FSA is the largest provider of postsecondary student financial aid in the nation. It performs functions that are akin to those of large banks, to which it has sometimes been compared.
