Waxman was nominated to be Solicitor General by President Clinton on September 17, 1997, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in November 1997. Named Assistant Solicitor General in October 1996, he had been Acting Solicitor General since September 1, 1997. His term ended upon the inauguration of George W. Bush in January 2001.
