The Republic of Cuba was founded in 1959, following a socialist revolution led by Fidel Castro. In 1963, the United States initiated a trade and travel embargo on the country that continues to this day. Cuba has been a member of the United Nations since October 24, 1945. Pérez Roque has served as Cuba’s Foreign Minister since May 1999.
