The United States has imposed a trade embargo on the Republic of the Sudan for supporting terrorism and human rights violations since November 3, 1997. Sudan has been a member of the United Nations since November 12, 1954. Yousif Saeed Adam Ismail has served as a Sudanese attaché to the UN since October 12, 2004.
