Ambassador Oliver Garza
The United States initiated a trade embargo of Cuba in 1963, following widespread nationalization of American interests. Numerous times since then, the United States has modified and strengthened the embargo, most recently in October 2003, when the Bush Administration increased enforcement of travel restrictions for U.S. citizens and closed loopholes for cash transfers to the island. The United States has been a member of the United Nations since October 24, 1945. Oliver Garza is an advisor to the U.S. State Department and a former U.S. Ambassador to Nicaragua.
