On November 18, for the first time in nearly four years, United Nations officials began inspecting Iraqi weapons facilities to ensure compliance with UN Security Council resolutions forbidding Iraq from developing weapons of mass destruction. The readmittance of inspectors was the latest turning point in a nearly 12-year saga that began with Iraq’s August 2, 1990, invasion of neighboring Kuwait.The disarmament and monitoring program was initiated in April 1991, following the defeat of the Iraqi army by U.S.-led forces in the Persian Gulf War.
