The Turkish ambassador requested permission to speak at the open United Nations Security Council meeting on the Iraq situation.Turkey provided airbases for coalition aircraft during the Gulf War. It has also contributed peacekeeping forces in Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Albania, Georgia, and Afghanistan. On June 20, 2002, it took over command of the International Security and Assistance Force in Afghanistan, where it has roughly 1,400 troops stationed. Turkey joined the UN on October 24, 1945.
