The United Kingdom is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. It was president of the Security Council in July 2002. It contributed forces to the Gulf War coalition, and its aircraft presently enforce a no-fly zone in northern and southern Iraq. It joined the UN on October 24, 1945. Jeremy Greenstock was named UN Ambassador in 1998.
