Ambassador John D. Negroponte
The United States is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and host country for the UN headquarters. It was a leading member of the coalition that drove Iraqi forces from Kuwait in 1991, and its military has continued to enforce a no-fly zone over northern and southern Iraq.
