On September 5, 2005, President George W. Bush nominated John Roberts to replace the late William Rehnquist as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The Senate, fulfilling its constitutional duty to provide "advice and consent" on the nomination, held committee hearings and floor debate prior to a confirmation vote. Harry Reid has served as minority leader of the U.S. Senate since January 2005. Prior to being elected to the Senate in 1986, he served two terms in the House of Representatives.
