1945 — After World War II, the Japanese occupation ofKorea ends with Soviet troops occupying the north and U.S. troops occupying thesouth. 1946 — North Korea’s Community Party is inauguratedand a Soviet-backed leadership installed, including Kim Il-Sung, who had beentrained by the Soviets and had fought the Japanese in Manchuria and northernKorea. 1948 — The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) isproclaimed.
