Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses

A total of 1.7 million injuries and illnesses that required recuperation away from work beyond the day of the incident were reported in private industry workplaces during 1999, according to a survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), U.S. Department of Labor. The total number of these cases was about the same as in 1998, following steady declines from the levels prevailing early in the decade.
