The Government of Tibet inExile was established by the Dalai Lama — the spiritual and political leader ofthe Tibetan nation — in India in 1959, following the Chinese militaryoccupation of Tibet. The Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso is considered by Tibetans tobe the 14th incarnation of the Dalai Lama and therefore anincarnation of the Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion. He was enthronedon February 22, 1940, at the age of four.
