On May 26, 2009, President Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit to fill the Supreme Court seat that will be vacated by retiring Justice David Souter. Judge Sotomayor has served on the Second Circuit since 1998. Before her appointment to the Second Circuit, she served as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
