In April 2021, West Virginia became one of the first U.S. states to pass legislation prohibiting male athletes in the state from competing in school sports “designated for females, women, or girls.” The Save Women’s Sports Act determined a competitor’s sex “based solely on the individual’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth” — effectively banning transgender girls and women from competing on teams aligning with their identity.
