Hazardous Waste Legislation
On January 9, the House of Representatives approved legislation that would overhaul the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) review of solid waste regulations and expand the States’ role in Superfund, the Federal program for cleaning up hazardous waste sites. H.R. 2279, the Reducing Excess Deadline Obligations Act, passed the House, 225 to 188, on a largely party-line vote, with five Democrats supporting the bill and four Republicans opposing it.
