Senator Akaka was appointed to the U.S. Senate in April 1990 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Spark Masayuki Matsunaga. He was elected to his first full term by special election in November 1990. He served as Director of the Hawaii Office of Economic Opportunity from 1971 to 1974, as a Special Assistant in the Office of the Governor of Hawaii from 1975 to 1976, and as Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1976 to 1990.
