Carnegie Mellon established ISRI as a center of excellence for long-term interdisciplinary fundamental research, apprenticeship-based education and training, and international collaborations to address the challenge of designing, developing, integrating, validating, and maintaining practical, large-scale, high-quality software-intensive systems. Michael Shamos has been a faculty member in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon since 1975. Since 1980, he also has been an examiner of electronic voting systems for various States, and has personally performed 118 voting system examinations.
