Commercial whaling was a common practice in the Northeastern United States in the nineteenth century. The nation banned the practice in 1972 and was a leading supporter of the International Whaling Commission moratorium in 1982. The United States has used the threat of economic sanction against countries, such as Norway, that have sought to resume commercial whaling. Rolland Schmitten was appointed on June 23, 2000.
