Iceland was a founding member of the International Whaling Commission, but it withdrew its membership in protest of the ongoing moratorium in 1992. In 2001, the nation reapplied for membership with an objection to the whaling ban. Although it was initially readmitted without voting rights, in 2002 it was given full membership. Stefan Asmundsson was appointed on October 14, 2002.
