The SDLP was founded in the 1960s and has been the most prominent political voice for Irish nationalism in Northern Irish politics since then. It has been critical of paramilitary activities by both pro-unionists and the IRA. Then-SDLP leader John Hume and Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams began talks in 1993 that would lead to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, and Hume later was a corecipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
