President Obama made history on November 19, when he became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Myanmar, also known as Burma. While there, the President also met with democracy advocate and Nobel laureate Aung Suu Kyi, now a member of the Myanmar Parliament, to whom House and Senate leaders had presented the Congressional Gold Medal in September.
