The United States filed an amicus brief in this case because of the constitutional issues involved, as well as Federal law enforcement’s use of drug-sniffing dogs. Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., was nominated to be solicitor general by President Obama on January 26, 2011, and was sworn in on June 9, 2011. Prior to that, he was deputy counsel to the president.
