Officer William Wheetley of the Liberty County, Florida, Sheriff’s Office first started working as a law-enforcement canine handler in 2003, when he completed a 160-hour narcotics detection dog-handling course. In July 2005, he was partnered with Aldo, a German shepherd police narcotics dog. On June 24, 2006, Wheetley was on patrol when he pulled over a truck, driven by Clayton Harris, with expired registration tags. After Harris declined Officer Wheetley’s request to search the truck, Wheetley retrieved Aldo and conducted a “free air” sniff of the vehicle.
