Recent Action by Congress on Issues Related to Collegiate Athletics
In 2013, for the first time, legislation was introduced in Congress to protect the interests of participants in college athletics: On August 1, 2013, Representatives Charlie Dent (PAR) and Joyce Beatty (OH-D) introduced the National College Accountability Act. The bill would prohibit universities from receiving Title IV funds if they participate in athletic associations that fail to implement and enforce specific rules related to student-athletes’ health, education, and due process.
