Senator Thune was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004. He was a Special Assistant in the U.S. Small Business Administration from 1987 to 1989, Executive Director of the South Dakota Republican Party from 1989 to 1991, South Dakota Railroad Director from 1991 to 1992, and Executive Director of the South Dakota Municipal League from 1993 to 1996.
