In 2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the drug mifepristone in a two-part regimen to medically terminate a pregnancy. In 2016 and again in 2021, the FDA took steps to make the drug more available by increasing the time during a pregnancy that it could be used from seven weeks to 10, reducing the number of medical visits necessary for its use and allowing nonphysician health-care providers to prescribe it.
