The Republic of Turkey was founded on October 29, 1923. From 1915 to 1917, the Ottoman Empire — the precursor to the present Turkey — exiled hundreds of thousands of, and perhaps more than 1.5 million, ethnic Armenians. The Turkish government denies characterizing this as genocide. The following is excerpted from an October 11, 2007, Government of Turkey statement on H.R. 106.
