Legislative Background on Broadband Privacy
Recent Action by Congress on the FCC Rulemaking
At a March 31, 2015, open meeting, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved a proposed rulemaking to require broadband providers to let customers know what information is being collected about them and how that data is used. The proposal also gave customers the choice of opting out of having their data used for marketing by their provider and its affiliates. The three Democratic commissioners voted for the proposal and the two Republicans opposed it, setting up a contentious battle between privacy advocates and Internet service providers (ISPs) and their respective supporters in Congress.
