Representative Roukema, of the Fifth District of New Jersey, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980. She served on the Ridgewood, New Jersey, Board of Education from 1970 to 1973 and cofounded the Ridgewood Senior Citizens Housing Corporation in 1973. She is a member of the Banking and Financial Services Committee and within that committee chairs the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit.
