Last July, the House passed legislation to ban States from mandating the labeling of foods with GMO (genetically modified organisms) ingredients. H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, introduced by Representative Mike Pompeo (KS-R), would override a Vermont mandatory labeling law, scheduled to take effect in July 2016 (and any future State laws), and create a voluntary labeling process for food companies. The Senate Agriculture Committee is now considering similar legislation.
