The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was founded in 1975, after an attempted coup led to increasingly violent clashes between Cyprus’ ethnic Greeks and Turks. Although only the Government of Turkey recognizes Northern Cyprus, the TRNC— with the assistance of Turkish soldiers — maintains de facto control over a third of the island.
