On June 24, 2006, William Wheetley of the Liberty County, Florida, Sheriff’s Office, pulled over a truck driven Clayton Harris because it had expired registration tags. According to Officer Wheetley, Harris was nervous and breathing rapidly, and he observed an open beer can inside the car. Harris declined Officer Wheetley’s request to search the truck, so Wheetley retrieved his police dog, Aldo, and conducted a “free air” sniff of the vehicle. Aldo became alert at the driver’s side door, indicating that he detected the presence illegal narcotics. Wheetley then conducted a search of the truck and discovered 200 loose pseudoephedrine…
