As an autonomous province within Serbia and aspart of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Kosovo enjoyed a largedegree of autonomy, which was abolished by the Milosevic regime in 1989.Following years of mostly nonviolent protests and the setting up of anunderground parallel system (administration, schooling, etc.) for KosovoAlbanians, a violent conflict erupted in 1998–99.             InMarch 1999, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization intervened on humanitariangrounds to put an end to the conflict, which had seen a massive displacement ofthe local population.
