Privatizing Air Traffic Control

On February 11, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved an aviation reauthorization bill that included a provision to spin off the Nation’s air traffic control system from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Committee Chair Bill Shuster (PA-R) pushed for the provision, which would transfer control of the system to an independent, not-for-profit corporation governed by a board representing the airlines, airports, labor unions, business aircraft operators, and private pilots, among others.
