Senator Conrad was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986. He served as North Dakota Tax Commissioner from 1974 to 1980 and as Director of Management, Planning, and Personnel of the North Dakota Tax Department in 1980. He chairs the Budget Committee, and is a member of the following committees: Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry; Finance, where he chairs the Subcommittee on Taxation, IRS Oversight, and Long-term Growth; and Indian Affairs.
