Secretary Panetta has served as secretary of defense since July 1, 2011. From February 2009 to June 2011, he was director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He was White House Chief of Staff from July 1994 to January 1997, director of the Office of Management and Budget from January 1993 to July 1994, and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from California from 1977 to 1993.
