1970 — Twenty million people participate in the first Earth Day, an event organized by Senator Gaylord Nelson (WI-D). The environmental movement begins to gain strength and influence. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is created; it becomes the world’s leading funder of climate research. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is established. 1979 — The First World Climate Conference, sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), is held in Geneva.
