Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr. was the driving force behind Senate passage of the Violence Against Women Act in 1994 and has spent much of his Senate career focusing on women’s rights, as well as criminal justice legislation and U.S. foreign policy. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1972 at age 29, making him the second-youngest senator in U.S. history. In 1997, he campaigned for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. presidency.
